Microsoft Excel training
Almost nobody was ever taught Excel. They were shown where to click.
Most people arrive at Excel the same way. Handed a spreadsheet in their second week, told what to press, and left to work the rest out from colleagues and guesswork. It functions, in the sense that the numbers usually come out, and it leaves a lot of capable people quietly wary of a program they open every single day.
That is why we run three separate days rather than one general Excel course. A beginner in a room full of people building PivotTables learns nothing and feels worse. Someone confident with formulas sitting through an hour on how to save a file has wasted a day they will not get back. The levels exist so that everyone in the room is working on the thing that is actually next for them.
Which Excel course should I take?
Tick everything you could do today, on your own, without looking it up or asking someone. Be honest rather than optimistic. Nobody sees this but you, and getting it right is worth more than getting a good score.
Tick what you can do confidently
Eleven statements. No email address, no results page, nothing sent anywhere. The answer appears underneath as soon as you start ticking.
Three Excel courses, in order
Each one is a single day and each assumes the one before it. Most people take Essentials and Intermediate a few weeks apart, then come back for Advanced when a specific reason turns up at work.
Excel Essentials
Excel Intermediate
Excel Advanced
What is covered where
The same list of skills, read across the three days. Where a row says "assumed", the course expects you to arrive already able to do it, which is the quickest way to tell whether you are looking at the right level.

Power Query, macros and VBA are deliberately not on any of the three days. They are a different kind of skill and they need proper time rather than a rushed final hour. If that is what you actually need, tell us and we will talk about a private day built around it rather than selling you something adjacent.
Four ways to take any of the three
Same trainer, same courseware and the same exercise files whichever you choose. Roughly half of every day is you working in Excel rather than watching somebody else work in Excel.
Online
Live with a real trainer and a small group, scheduled regularly through the year. Bring a second screen, or a separate device to watch on, so you can follow the trainer and work in your own workbook at the same time.
£249 per person, excl. VAT
In person
Small cohorts at our UK venues on machines already set up and ready, which suits anyone who would rather not wrestle with their own laptop while learning something new.
From £299, by venue
Onsite or private
At your offices or private virtual, on your own version of Excel and, if you want, your own spreadsheets as the examples. Getting a team into the same habits on one day stops five versions of the same report appearing every month.
Quoted, best value from four
Self-paced
On-demand modules to work through in your own time, for people who cannot give up a whole day or who want to revisit the material afterwards. Register your interest, and we will let you know when it goes live.

When the answer stops being Excel
Excel is remarkable, and it is not infinite. There is a point where the honest advice is to stop pushing a spreadsheet further and move the job somewhere built for it. We would rather tell you that than sell you a fourth Excel day.
You are rebuilding the same report every month

Onsite and private courses
I thought I was an excel expert, I had been using excel for many years. I decided anyway to do this course due to the many updates that Excel has sneaked in. I learned that I was not in fact an expert but was considering that maybe I should have done ‘excel for dummies’. The information given in this course was amazing and the 8 hours flew by. The course tutor was incredibly helpful, going at a speed to allow all content to be covered but also taking the time to ensure that we all understood and had a chance to ask questions.
The delivery of the course was excellent with us all having spreadsheets sent to us ahead of time enabling participants to practice in real time and also acts as a handy reference point to look back over.
Fully enjoyed this course, felt the benefits were excellent and the course content above and beyond. I Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend a Vantage 365 course and will certainly be keeping my eye out for any relevant to me in the future.
Every Excel date, in one list
All three courses together, soonest first, so you can see the next day you can actually get to. Level, delivery mode and price are on each row.

Training a team? All three courses run onsite at your location, on your version of Excel, and can be scheduled on consecutive days for mixed-ability groups.
Cannot see a date that works? We run all three on request, and private courses can usually be scheduled within a fortnight.
What you get that you will not get everywhere
Small groups, real practice
Half the day is you in Excel, not watching a screen share. Beginner Excel is a doing skill, and it does not transfer from watching.
Trainers who use it for real
Our trainers spend the rest of the week building and fixing spreadsheets for clients. When you ask why yours is broken, you get an answer from experience.
Real prices, published
Every course shows its price and what is included. No "contact us for pricing", no surprises.
We say when not to book
If you are past this level, we will move you to Intermediate rather than take your money for a day you will find slow.
Teams we have trained
Not sure which Excel course is right, or want it for your team?
These are the two conversations we have most often. One is someone working out whether they are an Essentials delegate or an Intermediate one. The other is someone with six, twelve or thirty people to train, asking what a private course would look like.
Both start the same way. Tell us where you are and a trainer will come back to you, usually the same working day.
If Essentials is right for you, we will say so. If you would be bored by it and should be on Intermediate, we will say that instead, even though it is the same money to us and a wasted day to you.

Frequently asked questions
Which Excel course should I take?
Use the two-minute check further up this page. As a rough guide: if writing a formula from scratch still makes you hesitate, start with Essentials. If you can write formulas but you copy techniques from colleagues without being sure why they work, that is Intermediate. If you build PivotTables without thinking and colleagues bring you their broken workbooks, that is Advanced. If your ticks came out spread across the groups, email us what you can already do and we will place you honestly rather than guessing.
How long is an Excel course?
One day each. Our courses run from 09:00 to 17:00, which is roughly five to six hours of teaching and practice once breaks are taken out. Most people take Essentials and Intermediate a few weeks apart rather than back to back, because the gap is where you apply the first one and find out what you did not understand.
How much does Excel training cost?
Scheduled online courses are £249 per person per day excluding VAT, at every level. Classroom courses start from £299 and are priced by venue, shown against each date. Onsite and private courses are quoted separately and are usually better value from four people upwards. The price includes courseware, exercise files, a quick reference guide, a certificate of completion and three months of trainer support, and you can pay in full, in interest-free instalments with Klarna, or against a purchase order.
Are Excel courses worth it?
For a skill somebody will use every working day for the rest of their career, one day tends to pay for itself inside the first month. The cost of not doing it never shows up on a budget line, so it is easy to miss: an afternoon spent retyping figures that would not sort, a report sent to a client with the columns cut off, a number that was wrong for three months because a copied formula moved its reference and nobody could read the formula well enough to notice. None of that is fixed by buying new software.
What is the difference between Essentials, Intermediate and Advanced?
Essentials is about understanding Excel: structure, navigation, formatting without breaking your data, writing and copying formulas, sorting, filtering and printing. Intermediate is where Excel starts saving you real time, with references used deliberately, logical functions, text and date handling, data cleaning, an introduction to PivotTables and clear charts. Advanced is about making the work reliable and repeatable, with lookups, dynamic ranges, PivotTables in depth, what-if analysis, reusable models and reporting other people can use. The comparison table above sets all three out side by side.
Do you teach Power Query, macros or VBA?
Not on these three days, and we would rather say so plainly than imply it. They are a different kind of skill and they need proper time rather than a rushed final hour. If that is genuinely what you need, tell us what you are trying to automate and we will talk about a private day built around it, or tell you if the honest answer is a different tool altogether.
Do I get a Microsoft certification?
No. These are practical skills courses taught on Vantage 365 courseware, and you receive a certificate of completion rather than a Microsoft credential. That is deliberate: the goal is that you can use Excel properly on Monday morning, not that you can pass a test about it. If a formal Microsoft credential matters to you, tell us and we will talk you through the Microsoft Office Specialist route.
Which version of Excel do you teach on?
Microsoft Excel for Microsoft 365 on Windows, which is what most organisations now run. Almost everything applies to older perpetual versions such as Excel 2019 and Excel 2021, and to Excel for Mac, with small differences in where things sit on the ribbon. Tell us when you book if your organisation is on something different and the trainer will cover the differences that matter to you.
Can you train my whole team?
Yes, and for Excel it is often the better option. Onsite and private virtual courses let us teach on your own version of Excel and use your own spreadsheets as the examples, and getting a team into the same habits on one day stops five different versions of the same report appearing every month. We can also run different levels on consecutive days so a mixed-ability team all get the day that fits them. Call 0121 269 8660 to talk it through.
Do I need to take all three courses?
No. Plenty of people take one and stop, because it covered what they needed. The pathway exists so that the courses join up cleanly for the people who do want to go further, not to sell three days to somebody who needs one. If you tell us what you are trying to be able to do, we will tell you how many days that actually takes.
Can I bring my own spreadsheet?
Yes, and we would encourage it. There is time set aside on each course to look at a real file with the trainer, and it is often the most useful part of the day. Please check first that you are allowed to share it and remove anything confidential. If you would rather not, the exercise files cover exactly the same ground.
What if I book the wrong level?
Tell us and we will move you, before the course or on the morning. It happens, it is easily fixed, and a delegate on the wrong day helps nobody. This is also why we put the two-minute check at the top of this page rather than burying it: catching it in advance is better for you and for the rest of the room.
