Microsoft Excel Advanced
What you will be able to do afterwards
People arrive on an advanced course already good at Excel. That is the problem. Being the person who can make it work means every awkward job finds its way to your desk, and the workbooks you have built over the years have quietly become load-bearing. Nobody else can open them, you cannot remember why row 400 is hard-coded, and each month there is a bit in the middle you do by hand because there was never time to do it properly.
This day is about the techniques that change that. Analysis you can trust on large datasets, models that rebuild themselves when the numbers change, and reporting that other people can pick up without ringing you.
Why learn it with us rather than free
There is a great deal of free advanced Excel content and some of it is excellent. What none of it can do is tell you which technique fits the problem in front of you. At this level you are rarely stuck for want of a function. You are choosing between four ways of doing something, three of which will cause you trouble in a year, and you cannot search for a technique you have never heard of. A video shows you that a thing can be done. A trainer who builds and fixes this work for clients the rest of the week tells you which approach survives contact with real data.
Free content also has no order to it. An afternoon on YouTube gives you six techniques from six different people, in six different styles, with no way of knowing which ones matter for the work in front of you or which are being demonstrated badly. A structured day puts them in the sequence that makes them stick, and the reason formulas come before analysis here is that everything downstream depends on the calculations holding.
It also gives you a person to ask a fortnight later, when the model you rebuilt does something you did not expect. That is the point at which self-taught Excel quietly reverts to the old method, and it is why three months of trainer support is included rather than sold separately.
What the day covers
Five modules across one day, with hands-on practice in every one. The order builds: formulas first, because everything after them depends on the calculations holding, then analysis, then the efficiency and design work that makes it repeatable.
Teaching accounts for roughly half the day. The other half is you working in Excel, with the trainer available.

About the hands-on time
Roughly half the day is you working in Excel rather than watching someone else work in Excel. At this level that ratio matters most of all. Watching a calculated field being added to a PivotTable takes thirty seconds and teaches you very little. Building one against unfamiliar data, getting a number you do not believe, and working out why is the part that transfers back to your desk.
Online delegates need a second screen or a device to watch the session on while working in Excel. One laptop screen split between the trainer’s demonstration and your own workbook makes for a frustrating day, and we would rather tell you that in advance than on the morning.
Three ways to take it
Online
Live with a real trainer and a small group, scheduled regularly. Same trainer, same exercises and same courseware as the classroom. £249 per person excluding VAT, or three interest-free instalments of £99.60 with Klarna.
In person
Small cohorts at our UK training venues, on machines set up and ready, which suits people who would rather not wrestle with their own laptop while learning something new. Classroom prices vary by venue and are published against every date in the schedule above, so you can compare a classroom date with the online course before you decide rather than waiting on a quote. Brierley Hill is £299 per person excluding VAT.
Onsite / closed
At your offices, using your own version of Excel and, if you want, your own models as the worked examples. At advanced level this is frequently the strongest option, because the techniques land straight into the reports your team actually runs, and the knowledge stops living inside one person. We also run this course one to one, which suits a senior analyst who needs a specific set of problems solved rather than a general day. Best value for four or more. Ask for a quote.
Self-paced (Launching soon)
On-demand modules to work through at your own pace. Register your interest and we will let you know when it goes live.
What it costs to not do it
The cost at this level is not incompetence. It is concentration. One person can do the work, so the organisation lets them, and the risk accumulates somewhere nobody is looking.
A monthly model takes two days because a step in the middle is done by hand, and it has taken two days for four years. A lookup silently returns the wrong row after a source system changes its reference format, and the figure sits in a board pack for a quarter before anyone notices. A workbook grows to the point where it takes ninety seconds to recalculate and people start keeping their own copies, so there are now five versions of the same number. Somebody asks what happens if volumes rise fifteen per cent, and answering it means rebuilding the sheet rather than changing one input. Then the person who understands all of it takes a new job, and the handover consists of a folder and a lot of goodwill.
None of that appears on a budget line, which is exactly why it persists. One day and a couple of hundred pounds a head, against a process someone repeats every month and a dependency the business has not priced, is not a close call. Most delegates recover the cost the first time they run their own reporting after the course.
At this level the problem is rarely what you cannot do. It is what only you can do.
Here is what we tend to see arriving on the morning of an advanced course, and what has usually changed by the end of the day. If the left-hand column is uncomfortably familiar, that is the point, and you are in very good company.
How it usually looks
How it looks by five o’clock
I thought I was an excel expert, I had been using excel for many years. I decided anyway to do this course due to the many updates that Excel has sneaked in. I learned that I was not in fact an expert but was considering that maybe I should have done ‘excel for dummies’. The information given in this course was amazing and the 8 hours flew by. The course tutor was incredibly helpful, going at a speed to allow all content to be covered but also taking the time to ensure that we all understood and had a chance to ask questions.
The delivery of the course was excellent with us all having spreadsheets sent to us ahead of time enabling participants to practice in real time and also acts as a handy reference point to look back over.
Fully enjoyed this course, felt the benefits were excellent and the course content above and beyond. I Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend a Vantage 365 course and will certainly be keeping my eye out for any relevant to me in the future.
The course ends. The support does not.
Advanced training has a particular failure mode. You go back full of intent, rebuild one piece of a model beautifully, and then hit the version of the problem the exercise files did not cover, usually in a workbook you cannot afford to break. That moment, generally about a fortnight in, decides whether the day was worth it.
Trainer email support
Email our support team with the questions that come up as you apply it to your own reports. Not a ticket queue, and not a chatbot. The people who teach you, answering the thing you are actually stuck on.
The learner community
A private community for people who have trained with us, with a board for each technology. Ask questions, read what others have hit, and get answers from our trainers and other delegates. Your access does not expire when the three months do.
Where this fits
The Excel learning pathway
Three courses, in order. Most people take Essentials and Intermediate a few weeks apart, then come back for Advanced when they have a reason to.
Excel Essentials
Structure, navigation, formatting, your first formulas, sorting and filtering, and printing. The foundation everything else is built on. No prerequisites at all.
Excel Intermediate
Where Excel starts to give you the time back: references that hold, logical and text functions, clean data, first PivotTables and charts that make the point.
Excel Advanced
Advanced functions and lookups, PivotTables in depth, what-if analysis, reusable models and reporting other people can use. The point at which colleagues start asking how you did that.

Ask before you book
Tell us what you can already do in Excel and we will tell you which of the three courses to book, or whether the honest answer is Power BI. Getting this wrong is the single most common way a training day gets wasted, and it takes two minutes to avoid.
Onsite & closed courses
For four or more people, onsite is usually better value, and we can teach on your own version of Excel using your own reports as the examples. At this level it is also the fastest way to stop the monthly report living inside one person’s head.
Not sure whether you are Advanced or ready for Power BI, or want it for your team?
These are the two conversations we have most often about this course. One is someone working out whether Advanced Excel is the answer or whether their reporting has genuinely outgrown spreadsheets. The other is someone with six, twelve or thirty people to train, asking what a private course would look like.
Both start the same way. Tell us where you are and a trainer will come back to you, usually the same working day.
If Advanced is right for you, we will say so. If you would spend the day watching other people catch up, or if what you actually need is Power BI or a consultant to rebuild a model, we will tell you that instead, even though it is the same money to us and a wasted day to you.

What you get that you will not get everywhere
Small groups, real practice
Half the day is you in Excel, not watching a screen share. At the advanced level, the gap between watching a technique and using it on unfamiliar data is the whole point.
Trainers who use it for real
Our trainers spend the rest of the week building and fixing models for clients. When you ask why yours recalculates slowly, you get an answer from experience rather than from the manual.
Real prices, published
Every course shows its price and what is included. No “contact us for pricing”, no surprises.
We say when not to book
If Excel is no longer the right tool for what you are doing, we will tell you and point you at Power BI, rather than take your money for a day that will not fix it.

The content was clear, practical, and easy to follow, with examples that actually relate to real work situations. It’s helped me feel much more confident using Excel and work more efficiently with complex spreadsheets. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone wanting to improve their Excel skills at work.
I had one on one training for this course so I got huge amounts out of it from Suzanne who’s a very knowledgeable instructor.

Frequently asked questions
Am I the right level for the Microsoft Excel Advanced course?
You are ready for Excel Advanced if you can build a PivotTable without looking it up, use absolute and relative cell references deliberately, write a lookup formula and fix it when it returns an error, and clean and filter a list of several thousand rows. If PivotTables are something you avoid, or formulas break when you copy them, Excel Intermediate is the better day. Describe your typical day in Excel and Vantage 365 will place you honestly, including when that means the cheaper course.
What are the prerequisites for the Microsoft Excel Advanced course?
The Microsoft Excel Advanced course assumes confident everyday use of Excel: writing your own formulas, building a basic PivotTable, and sorting, cleaning and filtering a large list. There is no formal qualification requirement, and no coding experience is needed or involved. Delegates usually arrive either from Excel Intermediate or from several years of daily spreadsheet work.
What is an advanced Excel user?
An advanced Excel user builds spreadsheets that keep working without them. In practice that means using advanced logical and lookup functions such as XLOOKUP, working with dynamic ranges so reports pick up new data on their own, analysing large datasets with PivotTables, PivotCharts and calculated fields, testing outcomes with what-if tools, and designing workbooks that other people can check and use safely. The distinction is reliability and reuse rather than the number of functions someone can name.
What does an advanced Excel course cover?
An advanced Excel course covers advanced logical functions, nested formulas and complex conditions, lookup functions such as XLOOKUP, dynamic ranges, troubleshooting complex formulas, PivotTables in depth with grouping, filtering and calculated fields, PivotCharts, what-if analysis using Scenario Manager, Goal Seek and data tables, reusable spreadsheet models that reduce manual work, and professional reporting and dashboard design. The Vantage 365 Microsoft Excel Advanced course covers all of it in one day, across five modules with hands-on practice in each.
What is the difference between Excel Intermediate and Excel Advanced?
Excel Intermediate covers the everyday techniques that give time back: cell references that hold when copied, logical and text functions, cleaning and filtering data, first PivotTables and clear charts. Excel Advanced assumes all of that and adds advanced logical and lookup functions, dynamic ranges, PivotTables in depth with calculated fields, what-if and scenario analysis, reusable models, and reporting designed for other people to use. Anyone who can already do the Intermediate list without thinking is ready for Advanced.
When should you use XLOOKUP instead of VLOOKUP in Excel?
Use XLOOKUP instead of VLOOKUP wherever your version of Excel offers it. XLOOKUP searches in any direction rather than only to the right, does not break when someone inserts a column, takes a built-in argument for what to do when nothing is found, and is far easier to read six months later. XLOOKUP is available in Microsoft 365 and Excel 2021, but not in Excel 2019 or earlier, so being able to read a VLOOKUP and replace it safely still matters.
What is what-if analysis in Excel, and what do Goal Seek and Scenario Manager do?
What-if analysis is the set of Excel tools for testing how a result changes when its inputs change. Goal Seek works backwards from a target result to the input value that would produce it, such as the price needed to reach a margin. Scenario Manager stores several complete sets of inputs, for example best, expected and worst case, and switches between them without editing the sheet. Data tables show the effect of one or two inputs across a whole grid of values at once.
How deep does the Excel Advanced course go on PivotTables?
The Microsoft Excel Advanced course covers PivotTables in depth: creating and modifying them, grouping and filtering PivotTable data, calculated fields and values, PivotCharts for visual analysis, and the design decisions that keep a PivotTable readable and correct. A full module of the five is given to PivotTables. Modelling relationships across several separate tables sits beyond Excel's comfortable range and is better answered with Power BI.
How long does it take to become an advanced Excel user?
With training, about a day, followed by a few months of applying it to real work. Without training most people plateau, because at this level you cannot search for a technique you have never heard of, and everything you have already built works well enough to leave alone. That is why the same handful of techniques surprise almost every delegate on this course, including people who have used Excel daily for fifteen years.
How much does the Microsoft Excel Advanced course cost?
The Vantage 365 Microsoft Excel Advanced course costs £249 per person excluding VAT online, and from £299 per person excluding VAT in the classroom, priced by venue and published against every date. Both include the courseware, exercise files, a quick reference guide, a certificate of completion and three months of trainer support. Private onsite and one-to-one training is quoted separately.
Can I pay for Excel Advanced training in instalments?
Yes. The online course can be paid in three interest-free instalments of £99.60 using Klarna, offered at checkout. That is the full £298.80 including VAT split into three, with nothing extra to pay. Klarna's own terms apply and acceptance is subject to status. Vantage 365 can also raise an invoice against a purchase order if your employer is paying.
Is there a certification or exam at the end of Excel Advanced?
No. Microsoft Excel Advanced is a practical skills course taught on Vantage 365 courseware, and delegates receive a certificate of completion rather than a Microsoft certification. There is no exam and no revision. If a formal Microsoft credential matters to you, ask and we will talk you through the Microsoft Office Specialist route instead.
Which version of Excel is the Excel Advanced course taught on?
Microsoft Excel for Microsoft 365 on Windows, which is the version most organisations now run. Version matters more at advanced level than lower down the pathway, because XLOOKUP and the dynamic array functions are not available in Excel 2019 or earlier. If your organisation is on an older perpetual version, or your team works on Mac, say so when booking and the trainer will cover the equivalent techniques that work for you.
What do I need for the online Excel Advanced course?
A computer with Microsoft Excel installed and a reliable internet connection. A second screen, or a separate device to watch the session on, is strongly recommended so that you can follow the trainer and work in your own workbook at the same time. Doing both on a single laptop screen makes for a frustrating day.
Do I need to prepare anything before the Excel Advanced course?
No. Everything is provided, including exercise files built to look like real reports and models rather than artificial data. If there is a particular problem you are hoping to solve, mention it when booking and it will be passed to the trainer. Working through your own workbooks in detail suits a private onsite or one-to-one course, where the whole day can be built around your files.
Should I learn Power BI instead of advanced Excel?
Choose advanced Excel when the analysis is yours, the data fits comfortably in a workbook, and you need flexibility. Choose Power BI when several people need the same numbers at once, when data has to refresh from source systems on a schedule, or when a workbook has grown slow and fragile. Many people need both, and taking Excel Advanced first makes the Power BI course easier. The right place to start with Power BI is DP-605, the one-day introduction, rather than the four-day PL-300 certification.
Can Vantage 365 run Excel Advanced training for my team, or one to one?
Yes to both. Onsite and private virtual deliveries use your own version of Excel and your own reports as the worked examples, and are usually better value from four people upwards. Vantage 365 also runs this course one to one, which suits a senior analyst who needs a day spent on a specific set of problems rather than a general syllabus. Call 0121 269 8660 for a quote.
What should I do after the Microsoft Excel Advanced course?
Rebuild one part of your most time-consuming report within the first fortnight, because applying it quickly is what makes it stick. After that the next step depends on the direction of travel. If your work is becoming more about shared reporting and refreshing data, DP-605 is the one-day introduction to Power BI. If it is becoming more about removing manual steps between applications rather than inside one workbook, the Power Platform is the better route.
