Create Agents in Microsoft Copilot Studio

Everyone in your organisation has an opinion about agents. Almost nobody has built one. One day, more of it at the keyboard than in the slides, and you leave having built, grounded and published agents yourself rather than watched someone else do it.

Engaging and useful

August 4, 2026

Matt gave us training on Power BI, while it was alot of information to take in over two days the training was engaging and I found it interesting. Matt kept us focused with a combination of presenting the info and letting us have a go with elements of practical learning.

Great trainer, very useful session

July 9, 2026

I attended the App in a Day workshop in July 2026. The trainer, Matt, very very knowledgeable with Power Apps, and also very clear when taking us through the workshop. Even though I have used Power Apps before to create an app, this session gave me knowledge of areas of the App that I did not know previously. Really good session, I would reccommend to anyone who has either a basic knowledge, or no knowledge of Power Apps.

Useful intro to Power Apps

September 27, 2026

Useful intro to PowerApps. My only criticism would be the amount of presentation content before the practical exercises building apps commenced. Would be better to do more hand-on building and less learning about the product

David

Calm, relaxed and productive learning

September 25, 2026

The set up and presentation of the course was well planned, very calm, steady and open to free discussion around the topics included. Would definitely recommend.

What you will be able to do afterwards

By the end of the day you can take a question your organisation answers over and over again, and turn it into an agent that answers it instead. Not a demo you watched. One you built, grounded in real content, tested, published and shared.

Choose between Copilot Studio, Agent Builder in Microsoft 365 Copilot and Microsoft Foundry, and between the classic and new authoring experiences and their harnesses
Create and configure an agent in Copilot Studio, by describing it in natural language, from a template, from blank, or by installing a managed agent
Write agent instructions that actually steer it, covering role, scope, context, tone and what to do when it is unsure
Add knowledge so the agent answers from your content rather than guessing, and tune generative answers, content moderation and web search
Build topics for the conversations that must go the same way every time, using message, question, condition, adaptive card and tool nodes
Work with variables and entities, including prebuilt, closed list and regular expression entities
Build a Copilot Studio workflow, add it as a tool, and pass values in and out of it
Test the agent, configure authentication, publish it and deploy it to channels including Microsoft Teams

The Applied Skills credential. Every objective above maps to a task measured by Microsoft Applied Skills: Build an agent in Microsoft Copilot Studio, credential code APL-6006, so the day doubles as your preparation for it.

The five tasks measured are creating and configuring an agent, configuring generative AI and knowledge, creating and configuring topics, configuring tools, and sharing and publishing an agent. It is scenario-based: rather than answering multiple-choice questions you are dropped into a live lab and assessed on the work you produce, which is precisely why hiring managers pay attention to it.

You take it yourself on Microsoft Learn, free, with a 72-hour cooldown between attempts. Our trainers walk you through the official study guide at the end of the day and tell you exactly where people lose marks.

Why learn it with us rather than for free

The Copilot Studio material is on Microsoft Learn, free, and if you are self-motivated you can work through it. What a course gives you is pace, a trainer who can answer the question the documentation does not, and someone who has watched a hundred agents fail in the same three ways. Copilot Studio is also moving faster than almost anything else Microsoft ships. Microsoft rewrote this course in June 2026 around generative orchestration, then updated it again in August 2026 for the new authoring experience. A trainer who builds these for clients the rest of the week is the difference between learning what the product does and learning what it does in practice.

It also gives you someone to ask three weeks later, when you are grounding the agent in your own SharePoint and the answers coming back are not the ones you expected.

What the day covers

Four modules and four hands-on labs, preceded by a setup lab and followed by an optional extra. Microsoft rebuilt this course in June 2026 so that generative orchestration, rather than trigger phrases, is the primary way an agent decides what to do, and cut the content deliberately so it fits into a single day. The August 2026 release added the new Copilot Studio authoring experience as that optional final lab.

Here is the honest arithmetic. Teaching accounts for two hours and five minutes of the timetable, plus a quarter of an hour of introductions at the start. The labs account for three hours and twenty-five minutes, or three hours and fifty-five if your trainer runs the optional one. Microsoft’s own trainer guidance is blunt about the balance: over 50 per cent of the allocated time goes to hands-on labs, and trainers are told not to talk into it. The remainder of the eight hours is breaks, lunch and the slack a course on a fast-moving product needs.

Module 1 · lab

Get started with Microsoft Copilot Studio

What an agent actually is, and how retrieval, task and autonomous agents differ. Where Copilot Studio sits between Agent Builder in Microsoft 365 Copilot at one end and Microsoft Foundry at the other, and how to choose. The three harnesses, standard, GitHub Copilot and Copilot chat, and the difference between where you author and how the agent runs. Classic against the new authoring experience, and why there is currently no way back once you pick. Environments as containers, and choosing one deliberately rather than defaulting into the one you were given at sign-in. Declarative agents, and copying one into Copilot Studio to go further. Creating an agent four ways. Agent instructions. Topics, tools and knowledge as the three things an agent draws on. Generative orchestration against classic orchestration. Testing, authentication, publishing and channels. Copilot Credits capacity, and the built-in savings calculator.

Module 2 · lab

Design agent conversations using topics

Creating topics from blank or from a description with Copilot, and editing nodes in plain language. The node types: send a message, ask a question, adaptive cards, conditions, variable management, topic management, and calling a tool or another agent. Entities, including the prebuilt ones, closed lists and regular expressions. Variables and their scope, from topic-level to global, system and environment. The nine system topics every agent gets, including Conversational boosting, Fallback and Escalate, and when to edit or disable them. Voice agents, telephony and IVR.

Module 3 · lab

Build intelligent agents in Microsoft Copilot Studio

The module that makes the difference between an agent that sounds confident and one that is right. Building a knowledge agent. Adding knowledge sources and understanding what each one can and cannot reach. Generative answers, including restricting the agent to selected sources, whether to allow web search, whether to let the model fall back on its own general knowledge, and setting the content moderation level. Using generative answers inside topics.

Module 4 · lab

Add structured automation to agents in Microsoft Copilot Studio

Where the agent stops improvising and starts doing the same thing every time. Copilot Studio workflows, still called agent flows in places, built either on the canvas or by describing them. The rules that make one usable as a tool: the right trigger, a synchronous response, a hundred-second limit, a Dataverse solution, published, an associated Copilot Studio plan, and string, number or boolean parameters only. Actions, dynamic content, expressions, conditions and loops. Adding the workflow to an agent as a tool, filling inputs dynamically with AI or with custom values, choosing what happens on completion, and steering the orchestrator towards it from the agent instructions. Calling tools from inside topics when you need predictable execution.

Module 5 · lab

Create an agent using the new Copilot Studio experience

Added by Microsoft in August 2026. The new experience replaces the separate topics, tools and settings sections with a single build surface, and starts from a natural language description rather than authored trigger phrases. It is in preview, an agent cannot currently be converted between the two experiences, and the core labs on this course use the classic experience. Your trainer will run this lab if the group has the appetite and the day has the time.

Microsoft Official Courseware. The course was created in February 2024 and last refreshed by Microsoft in October 2025. That refresh updated screenshots throughout, corrected a Microsoft Learn module link and added Copilot Studio to the Power Platform diagram. Microsoft updates the platform frequently, so the exact syllabus can change without notice.

Who this course is for

A good fit if you are

A maker or power user who has been asked to “look at agents” and needs somewhere credible to start
Already working in the Power Platform and adding Copilot Studio to what you can build
In IT, service desk or operations, looking at the same fifty questions arriving every week
A business analyst who can describe the process precisely and now wants to automate the conversation around it
A consultant adding agent delivery to what you offer clients
Booked onto, or considering, the APL-6006 Applied Skills assessment

Not the right course if

You want to use Microsoft 365 Copilot better in Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams. That is MS-4018, and it is a different course for a different person
You need autonomous agents. Microsoft moved that content out of PL-7008 in January 2026 and covers it in APL-6000 instead. Ask us and we will tell you honestly where things stand
You are a professional developer wanting the Microsoft 365 Agents SDK or Microsoft Foundry. Copilot Studio is low-code by design and this course stays there
Your real question is governance: who can build agents, what they can reach, and what happens to your data. Start with MS-4002
You want to build in the new Copilot Studio experience specifically. It is in preview. The course explains it properly in Module 1 and gives you an optional lab in it, but the core labs are the classic experience
You need the agent built for you. That is consultancy, not training
Prerequisites: none formally, but this is an intermediate course and it moves. Microsoft expects you to be familiar with Microsoft Copilot Studio, Microsoft Teams and the Microsoft Power Platform, and lists basic data modelling, user experience design, requirements analysis and process analysis among the audience skills. In practice, the people who get the most from the day arrive having opened Copilot Studio at least once and having a real scenario in mind. No coding experience is required. Not sure you are ready? Ask us, and we will tell you honestly.

What is included

One full day of instructor-led training with a Microsoft Certified Trainer, online, in person or onsite
Microsoft Official Courseware and the accompanying Microsoft Learn modules
Your own standalone lab environment, provisioned for you, with no need to touch your production tenant
A Microsoft Learn achievement code, so the course appears on your Learn profile
A certificate and badge of completion for your LinkedIn profile
Guidance on booking and preparing for the Applied Skills assessment
All course materials and resources to revisit afterwards

Genuinely hands-on

Microsoft allocates over half the scheduled time to labs, and we do not quietly claw that back with extra slides. Four hands-on labs and three hours and twenty-five minutes, across which you will build agents four different ways, attach knowledge and tune how it is used, build a workflow and wire it in as a tool, and publish to a channel. There is an optional lab on the new authoring experience on top of that, which takes it to three hours and fifty-five when the group wants it.

One honest note about the labs. Each one is self-contained: you create a fresh environment and solution each time rather than carrying one agent through the whole day. That is Microsoft’s design, and it exists so that a lab going sideways at half past eleven does not ruin the afternoon. Several of the labs also use Copilot prompts to create and edit agents, which means the results genuinely differ between people in the same room. That is not a fault. It is what building with generative AI is like, and watching six people get six slightly different agents from the same prompt is one of the more useful twenty minutes of the day.

What it costs to not do it

Most organisations are somewhere in one of two positions. Either nobody has built an agent, the Copilot Studio capacity is sitting there unused, and the executive question about “our AI strategy” has been answered with a slide rather than anything working. Or several people have quietly built something, none of them the same way, none of them in a managed environment, and nobody can tell you what any of them can read.

Both are expensive, and the second one is worse. An agent grounded in the wrong SharePoint site does not fail loudly. It answers confidently, and someone acts on it.

Meanwhile the actual opportunity sits in plain sight. The same fifty questions arrive at the service desk every week. The same policy is explained twenty times a month. The same lookup gets done by hand because the system it lives in has no front door. Those are not strategic AI problems. They are a day’s work for someone who knows how to attach the right knowledge, write instructions that hold, and put a workflow behind the bit that has to be deterministic.

One person who can build, ground and publish an agent properly usually pays the course back on the first thing they retire. That is the honest maths, and it is why a day at the keyboard is worth more than another quarter of talking about agents.

PL-7008 Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be able to code to take the PL-7008 Copilot Studio course?

No. Microsoft Copilot Studio is a low-code tool and the PL-7008 course stays inside it throughout, so nothing on the day requires you to write code. You will write agent instructions in plain English, build topics on a visual canvas, and use expressions inside Copilot Studio workflows in much the same way you would use a formula in Excel. The code-first route to agents is the Microsoft 365 Agents SDK or Microsoft Foundry, and neither is taught on PL-7008. What the day does expect is that you can think precisely about a process, because a vague instruction produces a vague agent.

How much does the PL-7008 Copilot Studio course cost?

The Vantage 365 PL-7008 course costs £395 per person excluding VAT for the scheduled online course. Classroom and private onsite delivery are priced separately and quoted on request. The fee includes Microsoft Official Courseware, a dedicated lab environment, a Microsoft Learn achievement code, a certificate of completion and three months of trainer support. Call 0121 269 8660 for a team or onsite quote.

Is Microsoft Copilot Studio free, and how is it licensed?

No, Microsoft Copilot Studio is not free: it is licensed on a consumption basis, where you buy Copilot Credit capacity and agent activity draws against it. Some organisations already hold capacity through their Microsoft 365 agreement, some are running a trial, and some have none, so the first thing worth checking is what your tenant already has. One detail that matters to makers is that a Copilot Studio workflow used as a tool is billed inside Copilot Studio, so it does not need a separate Power Automate licence, although it does need an associated Copilot Studio plan. PL-7008 covers how capacity, billing plans and usage reporting work, including the built-in savings calculator for evidencing what an agent has actually saved. Vantage 365 will advise on what you need before you commit to anything.

When should I use Microsoft Copilot Studio rather than Agent Builder or Microsoft Foundry?

Use Microsoft Copilot Studio when a department or an organisation will depend on the agent, and it needs connectors into line-of-business systems, tools that take actions, analytics and proper lifecycle management. Agent Builder inside Microsoft 365 Copilot is the lighter option, for an information worker who wants an agent to answer questions from a team's documents with no code and no governance overhead. Microsoft Foundry is the heavier one, for developers who need model selection, custom data orchestration and complex multi-agent architectures. PL-7008 teaches the middle option, and spends its first module on telling the three apart, because choosing wrong is expensive to undo.

Does the PL-7008 course cover autonomous agents in Copilot Studio?

No. Microsoft removed the autonomous agents content from PL-7008 in January 2026, both to bring the course back into a single day and because Microsoft covers the subject more extensively in APL-6000. PL-7008 covers agents that respond, retrieve, answer and take defined actions through tools, which is what the large majority of first agents need to do. If autonomous, event-triggered agents are specifically what you are after, tell Vantage 365 and you will get an honest answer about where things stand rather than a booking.

What is the difference between the classic and the new Microsoft Copilot Studio experience?

The classic Copilot Studio experience organises authoring around topics, branching logic and configuration nodes on a canvas, while the new experience starts from a natural language description of the agent, replaces the separate topics, tools and settings sections with a single build surface, and uses an orchestration runtime that plans a response instead of matching trigger phrases. Two practical points matter more than the feature comparison. The new experience is in preview, and some classic capabilities are not yet available in it. And there is currently no migration path in either direction, so an agent built in one cannot be converted to the other, which makes this a decision taken before you build rather than after. PL-7008 teaches the classic experience and the standard harness in its core labs, and Microsoft added an optional lab in August 2026 so you can try the new experience before committing to it.

How does the APL-6006 Applied Skills assessment for Copilot Studio work?

Microsoft Applied Skills: Build an agent in Microsoft Copilot Studio, credential code APL-6006, is a free, timed lab assessment that you take yourself on Microsoft Learn rather than at a test centre. You are given a live environment and assessed on the work you produce, against five tasks: creating and configuring an agent in Copilot Studio, configuring generative AI and knowledge, creating and configuring topics, configuring tools, and sharing and publishing an agent. Microsoft classes it as intermediate, the lab takes a few minutes to load, and there is a 72-hour cooldown before a second attempt. PL-7008 is the preparation for it: the labs, a walkthrough of the official study guide, and three months of support while you get it done.

How much of the PL-7008 Copilot Studio course is hands-on?

Three hours and twenty-five minutes of the PL-7008 day are spent in hands-on labs, against two hours and five minutes of instruction and fifteen minutes of introductions. There are four hands-on labs, preceded by a short setup lab and followed by an optional lab on the new Copilot Studio authoring experience that takes the total to three hours and fifty-five minutes. Microsoft's trainer guidance allocates over 50 per cent of the course time to labs and instructs trainers not to eat into it. Each lab is self-contained, so you build a fresh agent each time rather than carrying one through the day, which means a lab that goes wrong does not cost you the afternoon. Microsoft schedules the course as one full eight-hour day, including breaks.

What is the difference between PL-7008 and MS-4018?

MS-4018 teaches you to use Microsoft 365 Copilot well in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams, while PL-7008 teaches you to build the agents that other people then use. If the question is how to get more out of the Copilot licence you already have, MS-4018 is the course. If it is how to stop your organisation answering the same question fifty times a week, PL-7008 is the course. Plenty of organisations need both, usually in that order, and Vantage 365 runs both.

Do I need my own Copilot Studio licence to attend PL-7008?

No, you do not need your own Microsoft Copilot Studio licence to attend PL-7008, because Vantage 365 provisions a dedicated lab environment for every learner and the labs include the licensing needed to publish an agent. You work in that environment rather than in your organisation's production tenant, so you can experiment freely without touching anything live. You will want appropriate Copilot Credit capacity of your own once you start building for real, and Vantage 365 will advise on what that looks like before you commit to anything.

Can Vantage 365 run PL-7008 for my team using our own scenarios?

Yes. Onsite and private virtual deliveries of PL-7008 can be built around your own scenarios and your own knowledge sources, which matters more on this course than most, because the hardest question of the day is what a given agent should and should not be allowed to see. Answering that against your own content rather than a sample data set is the difference between an interesting day and a useful one. Teams usually leave those sessions with something close to a first working agent and a clearer view of which of their ideas are worth building. Onsite is generally better value from four people upwards. Call 0121 269 8660 to talk it through.

What should I do after the PL-7008 course?

Sit the APL-6006 Applied Skills assessment while the material is fresh, ideally within a fortnight, and build one small, real agent at work in the same period rather than an ambitious hypothetical one. After that, PL-7002 Create and Manage Automated Processes by Using Power Automate takes the automation behind your agent's tools a great deal further than the hundred-second limit and three parameter types that apply to Copilot Studio workflows. PL-900 Microsoft Power Platform Fundamentals fills in the platform underneath if you have not covered it. Autonomous, event-triggered agents are Microsoft's APL-6000 territory rather than PL-7008.

What does the PL-7008 Copilot Studio course cover?

PL-7008 covers building, grounding, automating and publishing agents in Microsoft Copilot Studio, across four modules and four hands-on labs in one day. It covers what an agent is and how retrieval, task and autonomous agents differ; where Copilot Studio sits between Agent Builder in Microsoft 365 Copilot and Microsoft Foundry; the three agent harnesses, and the classic and new authoring experiences; environments and solutions; creating an agent with natural language, from a template, from blank or by installing a managed agent; writing agent instructions covering role, scope, context, tone and error handling; generative orchestration against classic orchestration; adding knowledge sources and configuring generative answers, source selection, web search and content moderation; designing conversations with topics, nodes, entities and variables; the system topics every agent gets, including Conversational boosting, Fallback and Escalate; building Copilot Studio workflows and adding them as tools; testing, authentication, publishing and deploying to channels including Microsoft Teams; and managing Copilot Credit capacity and usage reporting. It uses Microsoft Official Courseware, last refreshed by Microsoft in August 2026.

What are the prerequisites for the PL-7008 course?

There are no formal prerequisites for PL-7008 and no coding experience is required, but it is an intermediate course and it moves at that pace. Microsoft expects delegates to be familiar with Microsoft Copilot Studio, Microsoft Teams and the Microsoft Power Platform, and lists basic data modelling, user experience design, requirements analysis and process analysis among the useful background skills. In practice, the people who get most from the day arrive having opened Copilot Studio at least once and with a real scenario in mind rather than a blank sheet. Describe what you are trying to build and Vantage 365 will tell you honestly whether PL-7008 is the right course, including when the answer is PL-900 Microsoft Power Platform Fundamentals first.

What is an agent in Microsoft Copilot Studio?

An agent is a program that uses AI to automate and carry out business processes, working alongside or on behalf of a person, team or organisation. Agents vary in complexity: a retrieval agent answers questions from knowledge you give it, a task agent completes defined pieces of work through tools, and an autonomous agent acts on triggers without being asked. An agent built in Copilot Studio draws on three things: knowledge, which grounds its answers in your content; topics, which are authored conversation paths for the exchanges that must go the same way every time; and tools, which let it take action in other systems through connectors, REST APIs, prompts, workflows and Model Context Protocol servers. Once published, it can be deployed to channels including Microsoft Teams, your own websites and applications, and Microsoft 365 Copilot.

What is generative orchestration in Microsoft Copilot Studio?

Generative orchestration is the setting that lets an agent use AI to choose which topics, tools, knowledge sources and connected agents to use when responding, rather than matching the user's message to authored trigger phrases. It builds a plan from the names and descriptions you give those components, which is why naming a tool badly is a functional problem rather than a cosmetic one. Classic orchestration is the alternative and works the other way round: it selects a single topic by trigger phrase, and tools and knowledge are called explicitly from inside that topic, which gives predictable, controlled paths at the cost of flexibility. Newly created agents use generative orchestration by default, and Microsoft rewrote PL-7008 in June 2026 to teach it as the primary approach.
